GameSpot's Fallout 2 Preview

The Story Thus Far
Approximately 80 years have passed since the events of the original Fallout, in which the one called the Vault Dweller ventured forth from the reinforced steel confines of his nuclear shelter to find water for his people. Over the course of his quest, he uncovered a much darker plot at work, one that threatened not just his vault but the entire world. And through a remarkable feat of daring and determination, he saved humanity from the diabolical Master and his army of super mutants. The Vault Dweller returned home only to find himself exiled in spite of his heroism; he had witnessed too much, learned too much, to continue to be a part of his sheltered society. So he traveled north.

Like in the original, Fallout 2 lets you select from three premade characters or create your own.
You are his descendent, a youth who grew up in the rustic tribal village of Arroyo. Your village is suffering through drought, and the elder has decided that you must go forth and find a solution as your grandfather did before you. Specifically, you must find the Garden of Eden Construction Kit (otherwise known as the GECK), a legendary device that was designed prior to the nuclear disaster to restore the world to its former lush, green glory. Now wearing your grandfather's blue vault jump suit and carrying nothing but a spear and a water flask marked with the sacred number 13, you must leave your village and seek out the GECK.

The Golden Gecko is where Klamath's citizens like to wind down with a drink.
The village elder and all your friends keep calling you The Chosen One, but you aren't so sure that's the case. You've never left the village before and you don't know what to expect. You wonder whether your spear will serve you well. You wonder what lies ahead - the places, the people - and how they will react to you. And you cannot help but wonder whether the GECK even exists, let alone Vault 13, your grandfather's alleged home. In any event, you know you'll find some answers soon enough.
